When travelling the world – especially if you decide to go solo – it is so important that you know exactly what you’re doing, where you’re going, and what you need, as you may be putting yourself in rather vulnerable positions. It’s an incredible experience, and you shouldn’t be put off by the idea of venturing out alone, but you just need to familiarise yourself with as much as you can before you jet off.

Here’s how you can keep yourself safe while away.

Emergency fund

As well as all the money that you will need for transport, accommodation, and food and drinks, you should also make sure you have an emergency fund. This is so (God forbid) if anything happens, like you get injured, you lose something, or get into any other kind of trouble, you will need money to sort out the situation. If you’re already worried about not having enough in your budget, you may want to look at cash loans. These are great for giving you exactly what you need, when you need it. Just make sure that you are able to pay it all back within your next known payday; otherwise, the interest rates will become rather expensive.

Sleep safe

Regardless of where you sleep, you need to make sure that you’re safe and off the streets. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in a five-star hotel, or an independent b&b, just as long as you have somewhere to put your head down and get the rest you need to recharge, without worrying about any potential dangers. If you have your own vehicle with you, you may want to invest in a second lock so it’s extra secure. And if you’re backpacking, always be sure to find a hostel and check it out while the sun is still up. Never leave it too late because it’ll be dark, you’ll be exhausted, and may not make the best decision.

Don’t carry your valuables

If you are seen having fancy things, like a pretty watch, a phone, or jewellery, you are essentially just putting a bullseye on your back. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with having nice things, but you need to know that if they are out on show for everyone to see, someone may just come along and attempt to grab them. So before you leave the hotel, (or wherever you’re staying) think twice about wearing that Rolex.

Befriend the locals

When you arrive at your destination, it’s wise to get friendly with the locals, not only because it’s nice for your social life and you may learn more about the area you’re in, but because you’re less likely to be targeted by a criminal. A lot of thieves will pick out tourists to steal from because they’re seen as an easy target as they tend to be alone. So if you are seen speaking to the locals, they may just rethink who they’re messing with. Remember that sometimes it’s not about what you know – it’s who you know. If you are travelling to a non English speaking country, it is highly advisable to learn some basic local words and phrases.
